Cardinal on a Snowy Branch of Holly

I chose to paint this tutorial of the Red Cardinal on Snowy Holly, because I was interested in how artist Diane Antone would do the lovely Bokeh background.

I transferred the sketch that was provided, onto my Canson 140 lb. cold press watercolor paper, using my light pad. After wetting the paper, I applied several colors of Winsor Newton Cotman watercolor tubes to the background leaving the area where the bird was to go white.. I let the paper dry and then I used several sizes of circle stencils to rub out the color with a natural sponge or a stencil brush. Then I painted the holly branch and Cardinal.

I used a Micron Pen 01 for details and used Winsor Newton Goauche for the snow. Later I spattered the painting with some blue watercolor and white acrylic ink.

A Loveable Giraffe

When my granddaughter was 4 months old, she would hold onto a sweet giraffe toy. While checking out all the great tutorials Tamara Laporte offers on her website at Willowing.org, I saw the perfect gift for our granddaughter for Xmas.  She will have a giraffe framed in white, with a small picture of herself inserted in the corner of that frame.

So, I learned to paint a mixed media whimsical giraffe.

I used Jane Davenport watercolors, Albrecht Durer-Faber-Castell watercolor pencils, Prismacolor pencils and Posca pens, on Canson 140 lb. cold press watercolor paper. I used a light pad to transfer the outline onto the watercolor paper.

This card was inspired by Creative Lass. I love trying new techniques with each of my holiday cards. Combining several types of watercolor paints brings out the details.  I use my Grumbacher Miskit on the holiday ornament. I painted the design with Winsor Newton Cotman tube watercolors. The added details were done with Posca Pen and Holbein Artist's Gouache.

I love this card design and plan to give it to my husband Sandy!

Three Blue Bells Holiday Card

While wondering online looking for new holiday cards to make, I found Sisa. She's a professional artist, who enjoys sharing her tutorials online. I love watching her videos demonstrating how to use the watercolors on white paper. As I watched I drew her design freehand on my Canson 140 lb. cold press paper. I followed her as I painted with Jane Davenport watercolors and some Winsor Newton Cotman tube watercolors. I used a Posca pen for details in gold and a Micron 01 for some additional line. I added splats with Speedball acrylic ink for snow over the top of the design.

Victorian Corner Shop

I really enjoyed working on this Victorian Corner Shop, a line and wash tutorial by Paul Clark. The outline was available for the basic store. It's up to the artist to make it their own, while following the techniques Paul Clark demonstrates. My store front is an art supply store, but there are a wide variety of store fronts design by other members of the group!

I used Micron pen and a Uni-ball Signo for the building and details and paint with Jane Davenport and Winsor Newton Cotman tube watercolor to finish the piece.

So welcome to my shop, I hope you find what you are looking for.

Rock Bound Lake with Onlooker

This Rock Bound Lake is one of several mountain lessons in a tutorial by Paul Clark. I placed a hand painted digital image to the top called "I Wish I Was There," from The Paper Shelter Digital Stamp Company.

The lake scene was painted some time ago on Canson 140 lb. cold press watercolor paper, using Winsor Newton Cotman Watercolor tubes.

I used Jane Davenport watercolors to paint the digital image, enhancing it with a black Micron 01 pen. I cut the image out and adhered it to the watercolor painting.

Metallic Mountain Watercolor

Continuing on my watercolor journey, I discovered a tutorial that combines regular watercolors with the lovely shine of metallic watercolors. The tutorial is from the "Studio of M.M." a Canadian artist.

Each line of the mountain ranges in this painting was done separately and some used Kosher Salt. Some were wet into wet and others wet onto dry paper. Each line needed to be dry before applying the technique to the next line.

I used Winsor Newton Cotman watercolor tubes and Master's Touch metallic watercolors.

This was a well worth while challenge!

A Failed Art Journal Page/Solved

My first idea for this page didn't work out. I didn't want to wreck my book by ripping the pages out. My solution was to spray blue Dylusions Ink Spray thru a very large Crafters Workshop stencil (12x12" Blooming Garden) and added black Posca Pen doodles.

My original idea included collage papers and blue and white paint. The lettering on the papers didn't show thru the paint, because it was too thick. I do love the textured background and white edges at the bottom and top.

Who knew ink spray could save my book!

Sunflowers for Ukraine

This watercolor line and wash is included in the Summer Hedgerow Coloring book by Diane Antone. In the book it's called Sunflowers, Butterflies and Bees. I love having this coloring book on my computer. I have lots of choices to paint at my fingertips with Utube tutorials to go with each sketch.

I used Jane Davenport watercolors on Canson 140 lb. cold press watercolor paper to paint this sketch. The line was mostly done with a Micron Pen, but the corn was outlined using a dip pen in Daler Rowney acrylic ink.

I know I will be painting a lot more of the sketches from this book in the future.

Robins in Gouache

While trying to learn to paint with gouache, I found Deanna Maree's Studio tutorial on painting a Xmas Wreath. Aside from learning the different leaves and flowers, it included three different Robins. The American Robin is the first one I chose for practice. I didn't want the bird to go to waste, so I put him on a branch with some pine needles. Now I have a lovely painting.

I painted these birds and floral pieces using Winsor Newton Gouache on Canson 140 lb. watercolor paper. Here are some of my practices, these will make a lovely wreath one day:

The American Robin looks so good, I decided to work on the other two. Here's the Rose Robin (Australian).

Here's my European Robin:

My husband, who is really into birding, recognized this bird immediately!

Holly Jolly Gouache is a free tutorial at Deanna Maree Creative Studio. I'm so glad I found her.

A Patch of Blue

This Art Journal two page spread came about with my desire to learn to do abstract art. Combining the colorful piece along with the nature study collage worked out well for the two pages.

I first ripped up several sheets of book pages and adhered them with matt medium to my journal page. I traced a stencil using a Micron pen to put butterflies on the page and improved the design with a Faber-Castell Pitt Artist Pen. Then I colored around the butterflies with Caran D' Ache crayons. I used a wet brush to paint around the design, activating the colors. When it was dry I drew stems and leaves on the painting.

I made the collage on top of a book page from bits and pieces from my stash. The children included are from a package by Tim Holtz. I adhered the collage on the page across from my butterfly painting.

Otterly Love

I'm fortunate to get to do another of the Taster art tutorials from Life Book 2023. Hurricane Ian has passed leaving me less time to do all the lessons. This is Tamara Laporte's tutorial Otterly Love.

I used my Jane Davenport watercolors for the lessons and several waterproof pens, including Posca and Micron.

I really loved working on this Otter and look forward to more art lessons.

A Butterfly Princess and Pretty Feathers

I was really fortunate to get to do a few of the Taster art tutorials from Life Book 2023. Hurricane Ian had just begun it's journey across the state of Florida. I got to work on Tamara Laporte's lessons of Feathers and the beautiful Butterfly Alchemy Princess.

I used my Jane Davenport watercolors for the lessons as well as several waterproof pens, including Posca and Micron. For the face of the princess, I blended Carand'ache crayons along with the watercolors.

I really enjoyed working on these pieces and look forward to more art lessons.

Abstract Floral Mixed Media

This multi media floral was inspired by Diane Antone's Painted Fall Flowers with Gold Accents. There wasn't a sketch for this painting, just a placement of colors on the Canson 140 lb. cold press watercolor paper. I used Master's Touch metallic watercolor cakes and Finetec Pearlescent colors. I added a bit Winsor Newton Cotman green. For detail I used Posca and Macron Pens.

This was fun to work on. It was hard to know when to stop.

Two Tutorials One Artist

Just checking online to see if there are new interesting tutorials, when I came across Diane Antone. She offers numerous sketches to go with her tutorials.

The first I tried was the Fishing Harbor sketch. I followed her tutorial using Winsor Newton Cotman watercolor tubes on Canson 140 lb. cold press watercolor paper. For details I add Posca and Micron Pens.

I actually didn't watch the video when I worked on Three Birds in Flowers, Leaves and Berries. I looked over her design and patterning and let it inspire my own work. I used Master's Touch metallic watercolor cakes on black Stonehenge 140 lb. cold press paper. I'm happy with this, it was an enjoyable piece to work on.

Priory Line and Wash Watercolor

This line and wash watercolor painting is of a Priory from a tutorial by Paul Clark. This painting was certainly a challenge. I learned a lot using the wet and wet technique!

I used graphite paper to transfer the outline onto my Arches 140 lb. watercolor block. I used Winsor Newton Cotman watercolors with a bit of white Holbein Artists' Gouache for highlights.  I used a Micron 01 for the line.

I'm really enjoy the work I get to do on scenes from Paul Clark's tutorials.

Portrait of a Pig Named Percy

This mixed media painting "Portrait of a Pig," is from a tutorial by Tamara Laporte. It was a fun piece to work on as a gift for my husband Sandy's birthday today! He will love it.

I used Jane Davenport watercolors and a variety of markers and pencils, on Canson 140 lb. cold press watercolor paper.

I'm very happy I chose to work on this portrait, which we named Percy.

Northern Lights a Watercolor Painting

This Northern Lights watercolor painting is from a tutorial by Sarah Cray for Let's Make Art.

I used Dr. Ph. Martin's Hydrus Set 1 liquid watercolors on Canson 140 lb. cold press watercolor paper

This was fun and a bit of a challenge to make the painting like those wonderful lights in the sky.

Metallic Watercolor Rooster

This colorful bird was painted following a tutorial by The Frugal Crafter, Lindsay Weirich.

I painted this beauty with the Master's Touch Metallic Semi-Moist Color Cake Set, on black Stonehenge Aqua cold press watercolor paper. I used Saral Transfer Paper to put my rooster drawing onto the black paper.

It was really fun seeing the metallic watercolors shimmer as I painted on the black paper.

After the paint was dry I added some black line details to enhance the piece, with a Faber-Castell Pitt Artist Pen.

Happy Houses Mixed Media

I love working on tutorials by Tamara Laporte and when there was a sale, I hurried to get "Happy Houses." I've been wanting to work on that one for awhile.

I copied the drawing onto my watercolor block (140lb. cold press) and painted mostly using Jane Davenport watercolors. I used assorted markers, pens and pencils to further enhance the painting. It was a great tutorial. I learned a lot about lighting, darks and lights in watercolor.

Mother Nature

This mixed media painting Mother Nature is from a tutorial by Tamara Laporte for the Art Soul Gathering 2022. It was a challenging piece to work on, but I'm so glad I did!

I used Jane Davenport watercolors and a variety of markers, pencils and some gesso, on Canson 140 lb. cold press watercolor paper.

Country Landscape in UK

This country landscape is from a tutorial by Paul Clark. I used an Arches 140 lb. cold press watercolor block. I love using the Arches blocks, but today I had some problems painting. I love the many mixes of green, especially the blue green hedge rows. I love to mix my colors, when I use Winsor Newton Cotman watercolor tubes.

I think I like the foreground on this piece the best.
