Life Book Testers

Focus on Love from a tutorial by Tamara Laporte

Back in September I began working on the free lessons in mixed media offered by Tamara Laporte and a wide variety of professional artist. The Life Book 2022 will come out in January and I got to try my hand at lessons that will be included n the book.

I'm very happy to have taken part in this event and learned a great deal throughout the two weeks.

Colorful Cow, a tutorial by Cinnamon Cooney

There was so much variety in the project available to stretch my creativity. I had not realized the breath of mixed media available to work on and really enjoyed it!

These are just a few of the tutorials I worked on but there are many more in the up coming book.

Blooming Garden

Sometime ago I noticed this stencil online (TCW810-Blooming Garden 12x12") and began looking for it here in town. I finally ordered it from Amazon and I'm happy to say it was delivered the next day. Two days later I painted this wonderful colorful composition.

Here's what I did:

I sprayed Pixie Spray (temporary adhesive) by I craft on the back of the stencil in th area I planned to paint. I turned the stencil over and placed it on an 8x10" black Stonehenge cold press 140lb. watercolor paper. I painted in the black areas showing with Fine-Tec Pearlescent Colors.

Store Front Gallery Line and Wash

This store front line and wash is from a tutorial by Paul Clark. The outline, which he makes available is of the basic store. It's up to the artist to make it their own, while following the techniques Paul Clark demonstrates. My store front is a gallery, but there are a wide variety of store fronts from Christmas to the occasional book store, cafe or fruit stand!

I drew in all the gallery details.

I missed a step, which would have been to paint a base coat over  the brick areas. Instead I used the Pebeo drawing gum along the lines on the paper for the brick walls. After it had dried, I painted the brick colors and when that dried I used a rubber cement pick up to get the gum off the paper. I added spattered paint and some other colors to show the age of the old wall.

I used a variety of permanent waterproof pens. The pens were for the building and details and then paint with Winsor Newton Cotman tube watercolor to finish the piece. I used a Micron pen to go over the lines one more time.

So welcome to my gallery, I hope you enjoyed your visit.

Mountains in Watercolor

Paul Clark's watercolor group on Facebook, had a three part lesson on watercolor painting mountains. The first was painting a mountain shape and dragging a credit card to form grooves and crevasses in the mountain.

The second painting was to cover different surfaces on the outline of the mountain drawing with masking fluid. Then paint details in the surrounding  areas. After the paint dried I used a rubber cement pick up to remove the fluid. I enhanced the painting with a white pastel pencil.

The third lesson was to paint a mountain landscape and lake. Paul Clark used plastic wrap over the painted surface of the mountains and rocks to get interesting shapes. But, it didn't work for my painting and I ended up hand painting and blending the color as I went. The glistening water on the lake was by scratching the paper with a mat knife.

I'm really happy that I could save my painting by blending the watercolors on the mountains and rocks!

Two Honey Bee Watercolors

This design was inspired from a Honey Bee tutorial by Sarah Cray for Let's Make Art. I added the Faber-Castell Mixed Media Stencils for the honey comb background. The image was painted on a Winsor Newton watercolor postcard.

For the second Honey Bee, I enlarged the outline and used Saral Transfer Paper to place it on the black Stonehenge 140 lb. coldpress watercolor paper. Instead of the vain lines on the outline, I drew design lines with a white Faber-Castell watercolor pencil. I also added the Faber-Castell Mixed Media Stencils for the honey comb background. I painted inside of the shapes with Fine-Tec Pearlescent watercolors and finished the wings off using a black Posca Pen around the shapes. I used Master's Touch Metallic watercolor cakes for the bee's body and Winsor Newton Cotman watercolor tubes for the honey comb background.

Chapeaux Shop, Line and Wash Watercolor

Recently a watercolor group (Art by Paul Clark and Watercolour Challenges by Margot), which I belong to suggested "store fronts," for a challenge painting.

I combined a few ideas and came up with a vintage hat shop. My husband Sandy had a photo of an old style barbershop which was easily turned into a hat shop. I found some ideas on Pinterest for hats and store fronts. I love hats!

I used my light pad to transfer an outline I drew of the shop, onto my watercolor paper (Canson 140 lb cold press). I went over my pencil lines with a Micron 01 pen and painted the composition using Winsor Newton Cotman tube watercolors. I used some wonderful techniques for the buildings at the sides of the shop. These I learned from Artist Paul Clark.

Two Dragonflies

This design was inspired from a Dragonfly tutorial by Sarah Cray for Let's Make Art.  I used my light pad to transfer the outline to a postcard. I used Winsor Newton Cotman watercolor tubes to follow this tutorial. The image was painted on a Winsor Newton watercolor postcard.

Simple Portrait in Watercolor

When I saw this project at Let's Make Art a tutorial by Sarah Cray, I had to give it a try.

I transferred the outline provided to my Canson 140lb. cold press watercolor paper, using my light box. I covered the lines in the portrait with Daniel Smith Artist Masking Fluid (it comes with several applicator tips). After the fluid dried I applied Winsor Newton Cotman tube watercolor washes to the paper. When the paint was dry, I used a Grafix Rubber Cement Pick-up and my fingers to remove the fluid. The hardest part of the project was taking the fluid off without ripping the paper. I covered the face and added a bit of spatter watercolors for texture. I did a bit of touching up with the watercolor wash, but really like the results.

Tuscan Village Line and Wash Watercolor

This Tuscan Village tutorial by Paul Clark was a challenge. I worked on it most of the day and I'm pretty happy with the finished piece.

I used my light pad to transfer the outline of the painting to the watercolor paper. I used two Micron pens (01 and 03) to go over my pencil lines.

I used Winsor Newton Cotman tube watercolors on Canson cold press 140 lb. watercolor paper.

Two Pearlescent Watercolor Paintings

I really enjoy using my set of Fine Tec Pearlescent watercolors. All 24 colors are just so luscious to look at.

I found a really nice tutorial by Emma Jane Lefebvre  on Utube. I followed two of her projects; the wreath and the mountains. I love how they look and that they really shine!

These paintings are 5x7" on black Stonehenge cold press watercolor paper. I used a tooth brush to get the spatter in the sky of the mountain scene. The two colors I used do add to the perfect night sky.

Now to find more paintings to play with this paint set.
