My Last 7 Widdle Women

Here are my last three pages of seven women in Karen Campbell's Whimsical Watercolor and How to Draw Series Book 1, Widdle women Edition. Their names are Kool Kat, Unsure Ursula, Zen Zara, Flowy Flora, Happy Helen, Blissful Beth and certainly not least Sassy Sam.

For these three pages of women I used Fabriano hot press watercolor paper. The girls were drawn using a Graphgear 1000 Pentel Pencil. I added shadow with a Blackwing-Matte Pencil and a blending stump. I painted them with an assortment of palettes from Prima and Jane Davenport. I used Molotow Blackliners for their outlines and for small colorful detail I used Master's Touch Fineliner Markers. Highlights were done with a Gelly Roll Pen. There are detailed suggestions of what to use for the girls, but as Karen says, I used what I have! I followed Karen's step by step details for the women, that were so much fun to work on. It's a fabulous book!

Cottage in Gouache

A couple of months ago, I was introduced to tutorials using gouache, in Karen Campbell's Awesome Art School. I love it so much, that I ordered an Artiza Kit full of supplies! When I'm not looking through the school tutorials, I look on Pinterest for more. I enjoy the variety I find to use and learn from them.

I love this "Cottage," which I found to use as a reference, but I could not find the name of the artist or a tutorial. I drew my version in pencil and painted it in my Arteza Gouache Pad, from the original kit. I've added more colors in a variety of brands to that kit.

The following is the original design I found to use as the reference:

I'm really happy with my own version of this picture.

Spirit Horse in Watercolors

This Spirit Horse is from a tutorial by Karen Campbell for Awesome Art School. It was drawn with a Graphgear 1000 Pentel Pencil on Canson 140 lb. watercolor paper. I used Prima and Jane Davenport watercolor paints. I used Winsor Newton Gouache for stars and highlights.

This was supposed to be a holiday gift for my husband Sandy, I was so pleased with how it came out that he saw it already! Oh well, at least he loves it!

Cottage in the Woods

This gouache painting was inspired from a tutorial by Melanie of Visual Mind. I found her on Pinterest. I enjoy working on a variety of her free tutorials.

I drew the design for this piece in my Arteza Gouache Pad and used two brands of Gouache to paint this colorful piece: Holbein and Winsor Newton.

I loved working on this design and making a change to it of my own!

Celtic Hare in Gouache

This Celtic Hare taking a nap is from a gouache tutorial by Lucy Brydon for Awesome Art School. I recently fell in love with painting gouache and enjoy following Lucy's tutorials. So of course I tried this cute bunny.

I used a compass to draw two circles on a page in my Artezia Gouache Pad. I plan to paint another animal on the bottom circle. I used a Pentel Graphgear 1000 pencil to draw the sleepy bunny. As I painted of course the picture changed a bit. I tried to mix my limited paint supply for his colors. Since it was difficult to mix the shades, I decided to make the background one color and mixed a green with a bit of black to make it dark. I followed it up with white plants and trees. I used a dot maker for the ones at the bottom of the painting.

Fairy Witch Mixed Media

I've done some really cute fairies. I wanted to put something new on a page in my Strathmore Toned Tan sketch book. Well it's a Fairy Witch, which was a delight to work on. I enjoyed following Karen Campbell's tutorial for Awesome Art School. I loved drawing this fairy and using a number of different pens and pencils!

This is what I used to work on this Fairy Witch:

China Markers (1 black, 1 white)

Sharpie White Paint Marker

Pentel Pocket Brush Pen

Molotow Blackliner

Sharpie Creative Markers (1 black, 1 white)

I'm so happy with how this piece looks in my sketch book!

Street Scene in Gouache

I've been enjoying the variety of art tutorials to be found at Karen Campbell's Awesome Art School. I've learned new art techniques and mediums that I never knew about.

I recently painted a number of gouache pieces and added supplies, growing my collection. Pinterest has a lot of tutorials using gouache. For this colorful street scene in gouache, I combined tutorials by Ellen Crimi-Trent and Melanie from her Visual Mind Channel. From Ellen's, I was inspired to use several buildings. From Melanie's I used the garden hedge with a line of flowers.

I drew this colorful scene with my Graphgear 1000 Pentel Pencil, on my Arteza Gouache Pad.The scene is painted in Holbein Gouache.

This was a fun piece to work on and I love that it was put together with my own ideas!

Folk Art Unicorn in Gouache

This Folk Art Unicorn is from a tutorial by Lucy Brydon for Awesome Art School. I enjoy Lucy's tutorials. I recently started working in gouache and love the look and style of Lucy's tutorials!

Lucy displayed several unicorn designs to use for this piece and I chose the same one she worked on in the tutorial. I drew mine using my mechanical pencil in my Arteza Gouache Pad. I used a couple of brands from my collection of gouache tubes: Arteza, Winsor Newton and Holbein. I included some Kingart Metallic watercolor paint.

I'm really happy how this piece came out!

Send Me No Flowers

I belong to the three clubs which make up the Awesome Art School. These include the Mixed media Society, Fun Fab Drawing Club and the Celtic Collective. I participated in tutorial crossover lessons between the drawing club and the mixed media club. Each lesson has videos showing the steps used, with a lovely portrait for a reference used in both lessons.

The lesson in the drawing club was in graphite, and I did it with a Blackwing-Matt pencil in my tan toned sketchbook. For the lesson in the mixed media I used Prima and Jane Davenport watercolors, blackliner pens and more.

The lovely reference has a head full of flowers, but I chose not to use the flowers, but instead designed their hair styles.

The work done in both clubs was a great experience with using a reference and using a variety of mediums. I love my resulting pieces!

Three Adorable Widdle Women

These three adorable girls are from tutorials in Karen Campbell's new book, "Whimsical Watercolor and How to Draw Series Widdle Women Edition Book 1."

For these girls I used Fabriano hot press watercolor paper. Each girl was drawn using a Graphgear 1000 Pentel Pencil. Karen gives detailed suggestions of what to use for these girls, but also says use what you have!

Rainbow Widdle Woman

This little cutie is from a tutorial by Karen Campbell for Awesome Art School. I couldn't wait to draw Rainbow Widdle Woman! I finished working on Rainbow, the morning Karen's book arrived!

I enjoyed drawing Rainbow from the lessons. Painting her with both Prima and Jane Davenport paints was great fun. I drew her with a Graphgear 1000 Pentel Pencil and added shadow with a Blackwing - Matte pencil and blending stump for shading.

Rainbow is outlined in Molotow Blackliner and small colorful detail was added with Master's Touch Fineline Markers. I used a Gelly Roll Pen for highlights. I used Fabriano Hot Press 90 lb. watercolor paper, which I had bought by mistake. It was ok as I was careful to use a limited amount of water. Normally, I use 140 lb. watercolor paper.

I'm very happy that Rainbow came out so well. I am anxious to begin the girls in Karen's new book, Whimsical Watercolor and How to Draw Series Widdle Women Edition Book 1!

Boudica in Graphite

No surprise here, I love drawing in my Strathmore Toned Tan sketchbook. This is Boudica a warrior princess in graphite from a tutorial by Lucy Brydon for Awesome art School.

I watched Lucy's tutorial on video and began the drawing using her lesson for the face. Later I turned the videos  off and challenged myself to draw the rest freehand, while looking at a small print of Lucy's drawing.

I began the drawing using my Graphgear 1000 Pentel pencil. Later I switched to a Blackwing - Matte pencil and used a blending stump for shading. I used a white Prismacolor pencil for highlights.

When I first saw the tutorial for Boudica, I wasn't sure my drawing skill was up to it. But I was up to the challenge and love the finished!

In Honor of Veteran's Day!

I would like to share with you the two men I know and the experiences they had during WWII. This story was written sometime ago and some of it was printed in a national magazine. Here it is, the whole story!
Two Views of World War II
 by Carla Brooke

For just about as far back as I can remember the camera has always been an important element in any events occurring in my family.  Whether it be my first steps or simply a beautiful panoramic view, my father recorded it for all the world to see and admire.
Before I came along dad had plenty of resources for his camera work, for he was stationed in New Delhi, India, as an Army radioman during World War II.  He was considered quite a shutterbug around his base, always on the look out for that great photograph.  While looking dad acquired a good deal of knowledge of the area and was assigned to drive high-ranking officials throughout the provinces.  Many shots taken on these trips later became award-winning photographs in the years following the war.

I recently discovered that my father was not only a wonderfully talented photographer, but a skilled writer as well.  The evidence of this is in the original copy of a story he wrote while on board a ship returning from World war II and illustrated with his own black and white pictures of the soldiers returning home after 33 days at sea.
Here is the original story by my father, Jack Gutstein.

THE PICTURE THAT GOT AWAY
I and about 700 other G.I.’s, were passing our thirty-third day at sea.  Our ship, The General Bliss, was now steaming serenely through peaceful waters, heading for San Francisco.  The Far East was now but an unpleasant memory.  The dangerous passage through the mine-infested Makassar Straits had become a mere passing incident, as was our stop-over in Guam.  Perhaps, there still lingered some impressions of the havoc wrought by war on Manila and Manila Bay; Corregidor, and Bataan, where the marauding Huks hunted, and were hunted, in those far-off green hills.  Gone were those frustrating hours spent in seeking calmer waters so that an appendectomy might be performed upon one of us.  Fragments of the resentment we felt for the poor chow and the bilge in the water lockers were fast melting in the warmth of the sun.

An air of expectancy, an electrical tension seemed to have charged the atmosphere around us.  The hubbub of voices dwindled slowly into silence.  It was a profound silence, but it spoke volumes as faces turned to look upward toward the crow’s nest.  Feet shuffled, someone coughed, a bell sounded somewhere.  Then the silence closed in again.  Only the gentle lapping of the swells along the sides of the ship punctuated the silence.

Then, land ahead!  The cry crackled and whipped throughout the ship.  It was picked up, relayed and relayed again.  Land ahead!  It traveled from prow to stern and amidship faster than here I can possibly tell about it.
Seven hundred G.I.’s then tore away all restraint.  As if ordered by some prearranged command, we started to climb.  Up and over the forbidden top decks we went.  Over the bridge and into the rigging climbed an eager brown horde.  In minutes every high point of vantage held its’ quota of men.  Again faces turned in unison, this time to peer intently toward the eastern horizon toward land, toward home.

Callously, I brought my camera to bear upon some of the faces around me.  The first face I focused upon disturbed me.  With the second, I found myself lowering the camera gently to my side.  Guiltily I looked about me!  I felt as though I were a trespasser.  As though I were violating the innermost privacy of each of the men I chanced to scrutinize.  On these faces were painted pictures of joy such as I have never before witnessed.  All about me moistened eyes told the story.  Here, campaign-hardened veterans, from the fetid, stinking jungles of Burma, the desert of India and other black holes of the orient, were standing unmasked for all to see.
Gingerly I changed position.  Eagerly, I let my eyes strain forward, my being filled with an explosive mixture of emotions.  Spontaneously, I joined in the wild cheering when we sighted the Golden Gate Bridge.  We were home.

Photography isn’t just limited to my side of the family.  My father-in-law, Anthony Brooke Sr., who caught the camera bug from his father, Arthur Brooke (a photographer in World War I), was born in Los Angeles, but grew to his mid-teens on a farm owned by his grandparents in England.  His parents, British subjects, were separated.  The farm is where young Tony became “fascinated by motion pictures and always wanted to be a cameraman,” he told me.

In 1938 my father-in-law rejoined his mother in New York and in 1943 married Marjorie Sugerman.  By the time my husband Anthony Brooke Jr. was born the following year, Tony was in a foxhole in Normandy.  He had been drafted in 1943, just when film director George Stevens began assembling the Special Coverage Unit of the U.S. Army Signal Corps.  As part of  “the Stevens Unit” or “the Hollywood Irregulars,” Tony became part of the small camera teams who moved from army to army covering the major events of the war.   Tony’s unit was based in London and “assigned like any news team.”  On D-Day he recalled, “the roar of thousands of planes overhead, bound for French targets.”

He started shooting the Canadian units at Gold Beach in Normandy, who met with little resistance, compared with the fierce fighting on Omaha Beach.  From there he was on his way to Paris with Gen. George Patton.  Once there he had incurred Patton’s wrath, when Tony replaced a carbine he carried with a pearl-handled pistol.  Patton, a stickler for rules, spotted the pistol and glared at Tony.

On the way to Germany, Tony shot a documentary on the second battle of Dunkirk, where German troops had breached the sea wall, surrounding themselves with water.  Czech troops fighting in the Allied cause surrounded the Germans and Tony filmed the siege until the Germans surrendered.  For this Tony won the Czechoslovakian Medal of Merit.  He went on to film the horror of the Nazi concentration camps and his final assignment was covering the Potsdam Conference, where President Truman, British Prime Minister Churchill and Soviet leader Joseph Stalin were deciding the shape of the post war world.

My father-in-law Tony Brooke won a Bronze Star for having “moved forward with advanced elements of United States troops in order to obtain more spectacular photographic coverage.”  He also got a commendation from Gen. Eisenhower as a member of the Special Motion Picture Coverage Unit.

Back in the States Tony became a union member which won him work as a skilled cameraman.  He worked for many years shooting television commercials and also helped to shoot several major motion pictures, before retiring to Las Cruces, New Mexico.

My husband Anthony Brooke Jr., who was stationed in Alaska during the Vietnam War, is a retired motion picture cameraman, who also shot many, many commercials and movies, now takes pleasure in digital still photography.  Sandy’s photographs have found their way into many newspapers, magazines and several art shows.  Photography continues to be a major focus in my family.

Pink Parrot

This pink parrot gouache painting was inspired from a tutorial by Melanie of Visual Mind. This is my second gouache painting from a tutorial by this artist. I'm so glad I found her on Pinterest.

The pieces I picked out to work on tend to be of dreamy imagery or Surreal. Melanie simplifies her basic drawing and uses decorative colors, not commonly used for the image. I really wasn't sure if the pink on the parrot was going to work for me. After continuing to work on the contrasting details the parrot just seemed to jump forward on the page.

This piece is painted on a Arteza Gouache Pad using Holbein and Winsor Newton paints. The highlight is from a Gelly Roll Pen and the bit of black lines is from a Micron Pen.

Evil Fairy Witch Enchantress

This is an Evil Fairy Witch Enchantress from tutorials by Karen Campbell for Awesome Art School. The image was broken up into two tutorials. The first was how to draw and shade using graphite.  I used a Blackwing Matte pencil. I smudged the pencil with a blending stump for shading. After doing the first portion with graphite, the second tutorial instructed how to use watercolor directly over the graphite. I used Prima watercolors.

I added more details with a Molotow Blackliner. I used a Gelly Roll Pen for the highlights. I used a Kuretake Gem Color set to fill in the gold jewelry.

The red background was done with salt over wet Prima red watercolors.

I chose to work on this image, to learn about watercolor over graphite. It has a very nice almost vintage look!

Samhain Raven in Gouache

This Samhain Raven tutorial by Lucy Brydon for Awesome Art School has been a real challenge to my drawing skill. I drew the bird on my Arteza Gouache Pad, but just could not get its head right. I finally consulted with my husband Sandy (a bird enthusiast) and in a minute later he fixed my problem!

I drew the Raven using my Graphgear 1000 mechanical pencil, along with a compass to make the golden circle. I panted the picture using Holbein and Winsor Newton gouache. The golden circle was painted with Kuretake Gem Colors.

I'm really proud of this piece!

Galaxy Witch

I drew this lovely Witch Galaxy with her very own owl from a tutorial by Lucy Brydon for Awesome Art School. I love the practice I'm getting, drawing some really interesting subjects. There was a selection of reference photos offered, but I love the one of Lucy's painting.

I drew the witch on Canson 140 lb. watercolor paper. I used two sets of watercolors: Jane Davenport and Prima Watercolors. I used Kuretake gold from the Gem Colors set and Dr. Ph Martin's Bleed Proof white for highlights.

I am very happy with this piece and proud of my drawing! Isn't this a great piece to post the day before Halloween?

Sugar Skull

I love the colorful Sugar Skull tutorial by Karen Campbell for Awesome Art School It's a mixed media collage tutorial, but I decided to work on it as a colorful design in my toned tan sketch book. I transferred the design into my book using my light pad and a Graphgear 1000 Pentel Pencil.

I made some mistakes along the way. Some of my large collection of markers and pens refused to work on the tan page. But I didn't give up, Karen has always said to keep going. Eventually I found what worked and made changes that worked for me.

I found the following markers worked the best for me: Sharpie Creative Markers, Faber-Castell Pitt Pen Brush Markers and Master's Touch Mini Fineliner Markers.

I'm very happy with how this piece came out. Good thing I didn't give up!

Day Before Hurricane Milton

I was waiting for Hurricane Milton to pass by, so I went online to look for some gouache tutorials and found Melanie. Her "Visual Mind," channel displays a variety of art pieces.

I fell in love with one exceptional piece. I followed a magical Halloween themed scene using gouache and watercolors. I drew my own basic outline on an Arches cold press watercolor block using a Pentel Graphgear 1000 mechanical pencil.

I've never considered using these two water based mediums together, but love the look! I began by using Prima Watercolors and the added layers of guoache in these brands: Areteza, Winsor Newton and Holbein.

I enjoyed the challenge of this piece and love how surreal it looks now that it's done!

Art Deco Girl

When I first saw the tutorial with the Art Deco Girl at Awesome Art School, I knew I wanted to draw her. I wanted a new and friendly face to be on the first page of my new Strathmore Toned Tan Sketch book.

I didn't watch Karen Campbell's tutorial. I wanted to give myself a chance to draw her on my own using Karen's drawing for a reference.

My Art Deco Girl doesn't look like Karen's, but she's a great look for that page in my sketch book!

I used markers, pens and colored pencils to make this girl mine!

Woodland Witch in Gouache

This is the second tutorial I have done since getting my new Arteza Art Gouache Case. The tutorial is from Lucy Brydon for Awesome Art School. Besides the tubes of paint that came with the set, I have a variety of other tubes. But there are still colors I'm missing! I'm thankful that I could mix my own colors with the ones I own!

Lucy left an outline which I could have transfered onto my Arteza Gouache Pad. But I drew this witch by following her directions. I'm so happy I did. I drew the purple hair lines on the top of the purple paint, with a Master's Touch Mini Fineliner Marker. The black lines were drawn with a Molotow Blackliiner and the highlights were done with a Gelly Roll Pen.

I really enjoy following Lucy Brydon's tutorials.

Wee Fairy in Watercolors

I drew this fairy on Canson 140 lb. cold press watercolor paper following a tutorial by Lucy Brydon for Awesome Art School.

Aside from learning to draw magnificent fairies, the techniques I learn make this art school worth both the time and money!

As I draw with my Graphgear pencil, I've learned to make my own little changes to the drawing.

I used two Prima watercolor sets, Woodlands and Complexion, as well as a bit from a Jane Davenport set and for additional detail I used gold from a Kuretake Gansai Tambi Metalic Opal Color set. For the black lines, I used a Molotow Blackliner and a Pental Pocket Brush Pen. A gell pen was used for the highlights.

Can you tell, I love showing off this wonderful fairy!

Two Dragons in Gouache

I recently bought an Arteza Gouache Paint Kit. It was a great price including 12 tubes of gouache in a wooden case. That's what attracted me to the kit, the case will keep my collection of gouache separate from the watercolors and give me colors I didn't have yet.

I tried out a couple of new and old colors on the Arteza Gouache Pad included in the set.

Lucy Brydon has a number of gouache tutorials in Awesome Art School. I had already done a couple in the gouache I had. I think the baby dragons were the perfect small trial on the first page of that pad. I drew each dragon freehand. The first dragon in the egg was done i layers of gouache, The sleeping dragon was done in blended color with white. For both dragons I used the new brushes included in the set. I plan to continue working in the pad improving my skills.

Sultry Fairy Princess

This watercolor painting is from a tutorial by Lucy Brydon for Awesome Art School. It's on Canson 140 lb. cold press watercolor paper. I used two Prima watercolor sets: Complexions and Woodlands. I also used two Kuretake Gansai Tambi metalic sets: Opal Colors and Gem Colors. These two new sets really made a difference in the crown and necklace worn by this princess.

I had some fun using Molotow Blackliners to add decorative lines and a white gel pen for highlights.

This piece was a fun and challenging piece to work on.

Mushroom Fairy

As soon as I saw Lucy Brydon's  Mushroom Fairy tutorial Awesome Art School, I took out my Copic Markers!

I enjoy picking the colors to blend on the Bristol paper. Making her mine was so fun. Although I love the black and grey background, I decided to leave it out and concentrate on the fairy and mushrooms.  I used Molotow Blackliners and a white gell pen for lines, highlights and details.

I'm so happy with how this piece came out, I wouldn't add a thing!

Sunshine Joyboy in Mixed Media

This Joyboy is from a tutorial in the Taster Sessions for a Light and Bright year long course, by Tamara Laporte.

I used Fabriano hot press watercolor paper for this piece. Since this is mixed media I used a number of paints, from Prima watercolors, acrylic paints, acrylic and watercolor inks, to Kuretake metalic gold for the sun. I used a Molotow Blackliner for the line details.

I especially had fun painting the hair and the rays of the sun!

A Vibrant Moth

This Moth is a warm up exercise in the Taster Sessions for a year long art course called Light and Bright. This tutorial is by Tamara Laporte.

I drew this moth from Tamara's drawing lesson, on Fabriano 140 lb. hot press watercolor paper. I combined two watercolor paint sets Prima Currents and Kuretake Gem Colors to fill in the sections of the design. I used a Molotow Blackliner for details.

The moth was fun to work on and use my new Prima Currents watercolors. I love the blues and greens in this set and the gold metallic in the Kuretake set is the perfect contrasting accent that I needed.

Wee Fairy in Alcohol Markers

I enjoy getting to learn to use the Copic Markers, that I kept in a draw for awhile! Awesome Art School has taught me the techniques I need to make my work stand out! This Wee Fairy sure does!

The colors on this photo are not as nice as the original art, the camera doesn't do it justice! I take a lot of care trying to get the colors right, by swatching them on a separate and checking them in my Copic Marker book.

I drew this fairy on Bristol Paper following Karen Campbell's lesson. I learned to layer colors with the markers. The Molotow Blackliners bring out the details and a gell pen was used for highlights.

She is a beauty and although I followed Karen Campbell and used a reference, I drew her my way!

1940s Glam Girl

When I saw this fabulous girl in a tutorial in Awesome Art School, I wanted to draw her in my Strathmore Toned Tan Sketchbook. There is a tutorial for this girl, but unfortunately it is not included in the clubs.

Tara Ciliento and Karen Campbell (owner of Awesome Art School) encouraged me to draw her on my own. I felt drawing those wonderful curls might not be within my drawing talents. But as you can see I was successful and found those curls easy!

This 1940s Glam Girl was drawn using a Graphgear 1000 Pentel pencil, with a white Gelly Roll pen for the highlight in her eyes.
