Painting With an Elegant Writer Pen

The first time I had ever seen a piece of colorful art work done with a Speedball Elegant Writer was in a tutorial done by Paul Clark. But recently Diann Zimmerman the owner of the group Watercolor - Beginners and Beyond mentioned it. I finally had to try it.

The Elegant Writer Pen has water soluble ink and is simple to use. Sketch and brush with water and greens and some pink show up. Dab with a tissue or paper towel pink shows up.

So I found a lovely tulip on Pintrest and made an outline. I printed the outline on the computer and traced it on to my watercolor paper with my light pad. The fun began with going over my pencil lines with the pen and then brushing them with water and an occasional dab of the tissue. Watercolor paints or other media can be add after the ink dries permanently,

It was so much fun I did another.

Ok your turn!

Peacock in Watercolor

This "Peacock," was painted for a challenge in Paul Clark's watercolor group. I used a tutorial by Sarah Cray for Let's Make Art.

After printing the lesson's traceable image, I put it on my light box and traced the image using a watercolor pencil, onto Canson watercolor paper (140 lb. cold press).

I painted the "Peacock," using Winsor Newton Cotman watercolor tubes.

If you are in Florida and visiting St. Augustine, stop at the Fountain of Youth. You will see flocks of these lovely birds on the grass and in the trees.

My husband Sandy Brooke always takes pictures of the peacocks when we are near the Fountain of Youth.

The Window a Watercolor

This lovely watercolor painting is from a Paul Clark tutorial on Windows and Shadows.

I transferred the outline to watercolor paper (Canson 140 lb. cold press) using my light pad. It was painted with Winsor Newton Cotman tube watercolors and enhanced with a white General's Pastel Chalk Pencil. I used Daniel Smith Artist Masking Fluid over the flowers to keep them bright on the white watercolor paper.

This painting took me 2 days to complete and boy was it worth it. I couldn't wait to show it off! I'm not a beginner, I went back to painting at the start of the pandemic looking for something to keep me busy. I've done numerous tutorials by several artists, but with Paul's I see right away how much better I am now at watercolor than I was then! Thank you so much Paul Clark for sharing your talent as both an artist and wonderful teacher.

Spring Sunset Landscape

This "Spring Sunset" is from a tutorial by Sarah Cray for Let's Make Art. In pencil, I drew in this mountainous scene. I used Winsor Newton Cotman watercolors to paint this scene on Canson 140 lb. cold press watercolor paper. I saved the white paper for the flowers with Daniel Smith artist Masking Fluid. I enhanced the sun with Dr. Ph. Martin's Bleed Proof White.

I really enjoyed what happened when I painted the sky wet on wet and it made it's own clouds!

Roman Bridge Watercolor

This "Roman Bridge," painting was done following the instructions in artist Paul Clark's book, "Watercolour Techniques and Tutorials for the Complete Beginner."

The book has wonderful step by step instructions to follow and a good variety of lessons with techniques.

I used Winsor Newton Cotman watercolor tubes on Canson 140 lb. cold press watercolor paper.

I'm looking for to doing more paintings using this book.

Three Bumble Bees

I have two paintings of different styles to show you today. Each is of bumble bees. They are included in a tutorial by Paul Clark.

The first painting is in the loose style with two bees and two flowers. I copied the basic bee form in pencil onto an old sheet of Arches watercolor paper. I wet the penciled in form with clear water and dropped colors into the wet. I brushed the color into their places. I added a puddle of clear water and dropped color into it and formed flower petals with my brush. I followed that up by painting in stems and leaves.

For the second painting I used the template provided, tracing it onto my Canson 140 lb. watercolor paper with my light box. Although much of the artist's instruction was in the wet into wet style, this is a tight illustrated painting.

For both paintings I used Winsor Newton Cotman tube watercolors. The second tight illustrated style painting was enhanced using General's Pastel Chalk Pencils.

Pink House

Before the pandemic, my husband and I spent a lot of time just walking around St. Augustine. It's such a beautiful town. Now we hardly leave the house. We are fortunate that our family is nearby and we do spend time with them.

During those walks my husband Sandy took lots and lots of pictures! This painting of a home in St. Augustine is one of those. I changed the photo into a line drawing and placed it on my light box. I traced the drawing onto Canson 140 lb. cold press watercolor paper. I followed that with a Micron 03 pen over the pencil lines.

I used Winsor Newton Cotman watercolor tubes to paint this picture and I enhanced the painting using General's Pastel Chalk Pencils. I used some technique, which I learned by watching artist Paul Clark's tutorials.
