Air BNB Watercolor

When Karen Campbell mentioned the next lesson was going to be this "Air BNB," I couldn't wait to get started. I love working on houses! This one for Awesome Art School was so much fun.

I watched Karen's drawing lesson and then drew my own with a Graphgear 1000 Pentel Pencil on Fabriano hot press 140 lb. watercolor paper. Once I got the idea she was going for, I was inspired to do my own thing with mushrooms, plants and a rickety ladder!

I used two sets of watercolors:  Prima and Jane Davenport to paint this bright building on an island and used white Winsor Newton gouache for the dotted mushrooms. I used a Master's Touch Fineliner for outlines and details and a white Gelly Roll pen for highlights.

I love the bright and shiny look of this piece.

Dryard Goddess

This lovely "Dryard Goddess" is from a tutorial by Karen Campbell for Awesome Art School. She was great fun to work on. She's a mixed media piece done in Ohuhu Alcohol Markers and a variety of pens. The last layer, twigs, leaves and dress were painted in gouache!

I began this piece by following Karen's instruction drawing her with my Graphgear 1000 Pentel Pencil and outlined with a Ohuhu Dual Tip Brush Pen, on Bristol paper. I added some pink cheeks and a redder lip with a Prismacolor pencil.

I used a Molotow Blackliner for eye makeup and a white Gelly Roll pen for highlights. Her gold freckles were done with a gold metallic Gelly Roll pen. The Goddess's earrings are done with Master's Touch gold metallic markers.

It took two days to finish this "Dryard Goddess," but it was well worth the time. I love her!

Red Head

This mixed media "Red Head," is from a tutorial by Tamara Laporte.

I drew this girl with my Graphgear 1000 Pentil Pencil on Fabriano hot press watercolor paper (140 lb.). After drawing the image, I used Jane Davenport and Prima watercolors to paint it. I colored over the girl's hair with a Prismacolor Pencil. I used a Blackwing and a Stabilo All Pencil for shading, Micron and Posca Pens for lines and additional images. The white patterns were done using Copic Opaque White. The dotted background was done with Sharpie Creative Markers.

This piece was so much fun to work on, thank you Tamara  Laporte!

Laugh Profile

This "Laugh Profile" originated from Karen Campbell's tutorial for Awesome Art School. Karen gave step by step drawing and coloring instructions, for this happy girl. She used guides, while I decided to draw the girl by eye onto a page in my Stratmore Drawing Paper Pad. Not a great drawing but I like her!

Using my drawing and Karen's reference, I drew this "Laughing Profile," again in my Ohuhu Marker Pad. I followed Karen's direction in coloring my drawing using Ohuhu Markers. The free hand drawing wasn't great, but a bigger mistake was not coloring the girl correctly with those markers. She ended up covered in streaks! I added Micron Pen details and went to bed! In the morning I decided to try again to color over those streaks and did it several times. The last time using the second color in a circular motion, it took! Of course some of the Micron Pen bled, but I did my best to minimize the bleeding. There are areas where the last pass of markers didn't take. I'm ok with that. I added white highlights.

I'm pretty satisfied with this girl, considering the mess I had made!

Mermaid Joy

This red headed Mermaid is from a tutorial by Karen Campbell for Awesome Art School. The class was actually on working in fountain pen ink. My Mermaid is mostly in Prima watercolors with some Liquitex acrylic ink used for her red hair and in the seaweed. I painted this Mermaid in my Canson XL watercolor book.

Karen taught drawing the Mermaid and using her ink to paint it in. I painted it in with Prima watercolors instead. I also used colored Mini Fineliner Markers (Master's Touch) for some detail as well as a Micron Pen. The highlights were done with a Gelly Roll Pen.

This Mermaid was fun to work on a great addition to my watercolor book!

Geisha in Watercolor

This Geisha in Watercolor is from a tutorial by Karen Campbell for Awesome Art School.

I used my light pad to trace the image as required onto a page in my Canson Watercolor Book, using a Graphgear 1000 Pentel Pencil. She was painted using both a Prima Complexion Palette and a Winsor Newton Palette in which I added two tube colors: Payne's Gray and Lamp Black. I used a Micron Pen for outlines and branches. I used a bit of a Gelly Roll Pen for a few highlights, but the highlights in her hair is where I left the paper white.

I'm really happy that I finally got around to working on this image!

Owl Mixed Media

I love Tamara Laporte's mixed media tutorials! Whatever group she joins or runs there are always a tutorial or two to work on. The latest group is the Sketchbook Revival Binge Fest hosted by Karen Abend. This revival includes past revivals from 2018 - 2022. I looked into each of the older revivals and discovered there were two tutorials by Tamara that I had not worked on. This colorful owl is one of these from the 2021 Sketchbook Revival.

I had a choice to either draw or trace this magnificent owl. I traced, because I couldn't wait to get into those glorious colors! I used Jane Davenport and Prima watercolor sets on Fabriano hot press 140 lb. watercolor paper. The bright colors are perfect for this outstanding fellow!

The details on this owl were done with Posca and Micron pens. It was so much fun adding more and more patterns.

I'm so happy to get to work on this owl and love how it came out.
