First I sketched the mermaid on Fabriano 140 lb. hot press watercolor paper, following the video and the reference photo and using a Graphicgear 1000 Pentel mechanical pencil. I went over the lines with a Stabilo All pencil. I followed that up with a damp paint brush. I found it a bit difficult to control the water. Once the work was dry, I used a white Posca pen for the highlights.
Although this portrait looks nothing like the reference photo or Karen's, I learned a lot and plan to try another!
