Zebra in Watercolor

When I began to paint this Zebra, I wasn't sure I would get through to the end. The stripes made it hard to keep my place in the painting. This tutorial by Sarah Cray for Let's Make Art, was a challenge!

I transferred the outline of the Zebra onto my Canson 140 lb. cold press watercolor paper,  using my light pad. I painted this animal using Winsor Newton Cotman watercolor tubes.

Alice in Mixed Media

This is my second mixed media piece taken from "Ever After, by Tamara Laporte. "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland," is the third lesson in this fabulous book. I so loved working on this painting!

I used a wide variety of media on Canson 140lb. cold press watercolor paper. I used Jane Davenport watercolors, Prismacolor pencils, Albrechr Durer watercolor pencils, Caran D'ache watercolor crayons, Micron Pen, Posca Pen and a Faber-Castell Pitt artist Pen as well as Tombow Marker.

I am so pleased with this finished work and look forward to working on another lesson in this wonderful book!

Little Red Riding Hood Mixed Media

I just got a book by Tamara Laporte, "Ever After." It has lessons in mixed media by several artists, each depicting a fairy tale. I painted "Little red Riding Hood," by the author and you can see the artist changed the tale to love. This digital photograph doesn't show the true intensity of the great colors!

This is the second time I used my Arches watercolor block and I loved it! I used a variety of media and enjoyed every minute painting this piece!

I used Jane Davenport watercolors, Caran D'ache watercolor crayons, Micron Pen, Posca Pen and a Faber-Castell Pitt artist Pen as well as Tombow Marker.

This was only the first lesson, come back and see what I get to do next!

Old Barn at Sunset Mixed Media

This "Old Barn at Sunset," is from a tutorial by Paul Clark, but with a digital hand painted image from The Paper Shelter Digital Stamp Company, attached on top.

I painted the barn scene using Winsor Newton Cotman watercolors on Canson 140 lb. cold press paper. I used white crayon on the rocks as a resist to save the white and enhanced the painting with General's Pastel Chalk Pencils.

I also used Jane Davenport watercolors to paint a digital image titled "Seeking Inspiration," and brought out some details using several pens: Posca, Micron and Faber-Castell Pitt Artist Pen. I cut the image out and adhered it over the original painting.

I love how this turned out and might be tempted to try another version!

Italian Village Watercolor

For Xmas I got a beautiful ceramic water cup and fabulous palette! I also got two Arches cold press watercolor paper blocks. I'm so excited to get to use these wonderful gifts!

For my first painting using my presents, I painted "Italian Village," from a tutorial by Paul Clark. I didn't have the same colors, especially the purple, but I do like the finished piece. It was painted with Winsor Newton Cotlman watercolor tubes.

I have pictures showing my progress during the painting, to show my son, who gave me the new supplies.

Negative Space Mushrooms and Ferns Watercolor

This tutorial by Paul Clark did not begin with a drawn outline and there were two lessons. I drew the three mushrooms on the side of a hill in pencil on Canson 140 lb. cold press paper. I followed Paul Clark's instruction using Winsor Newton Cotman watercolor tubes. First I painted the hill and then the background around the mushrooms. The mushrooms were the negative space, which I painted last. The painting was enhanced with General's Pastel Chalk Pencils.

The second lesson was to use liquid masking fluid to leave the ferns unpainted while working around the ferns. Liquid soap was added to the rinse water as you used the masking fluid to paint the ferns, with an old brush. I used Grumbacher's Miskit for the masking fluid.

Winter Forest

This Winter Forest is from a tutorial by Sarah Cray for Let's Make Art. I haven't been drawn to paint the many snow scenes offered by so many wonderful artists. Snow is not my favorite things and was a very good reason to move to Florida. I really dislike shoveling the stuff, not to mention driving in it!

I did want to paint this scene because I love its simplicity. It wasn't simple to paint. Each layer and each tree took time and effort to do it justice. I'm really pleased with the finished piece.

I painted the scene with Winsor Newton Cotman watercolor tubes on Canson 140 lb watercolor paper. I used both Dr. Ph. Martin's Bleed Proof White and table salt to enchanted this scene.
