Surreal Mountains Watercolor

While looking for something new and different to paint, I came across this "Surreal Mountains," tutorial by Sarah Cray for Let's Make Art.

I follow the instruction from the artist and used a compass to draw a large circle on my Canson 140 lb cold press watercolor paper. I drew some lines lightly in pencil for the mountains and began the paint using my Winsor Newton Cotman tube paints. I started with the sky (clouds were added into the sky with dabs of a tissue) followed by the mountains in shades of green. The textures were add by crumbled plastic left on the top of the wet paint. I added several birds in shades of dark green and grey. When all was dry I painted vines and leaves coming in from the bottom of the painting.

My adult son liked this painting and said it had an Asian feel. I am very pleased to hear that, I grew up with Asian art and took classes in history and painting!

Two Chicks in Watercolor

This mini painting of "Two Chicks" is from a mini tutorial by Sarah Cray for Let's Make Art.

I used my light box to transfer a line drawing to the watercolor paper. The painting is on a 4 x 6" Winsor Newton Watercolor cold press watercolor postcard. It was painted using Winsor Newton Cotman tube colors.

I enjoyed playing with the limited color palette and the out of focus background. It was an enjoyable challenge!

Blue Truck in Flagler Beach

I recently blogged about a monochromatic "Vintage Truck," from a tutorial by Sarah Cray for "Let's Make Art. This painting is of that same truck, now blue. It's parked next to a Mexican Restaurant in Flagler Beach, Florida.

Sometime ago my husband Sandy Brooke took a number of photos of that area, not far from our home. I used one of those shots to design the background in this watercolor painting.

I used several techniques I learned in Paul Clark's tutorials to give my work a realistic look. I used Winsor Newton Cotman watercolor tubes on Canson 140 lb. cold pressed paper. I enhanced the truck with Artists Loft metallic silver watercolor tube paint.

Prickly Pear Cactus

This painting of  a "Prickly Pear Cactus" is from a tutorial by Sarah Cray for Let's Make Art.

I drew this cactus on a 4 x 6" Winsor Newton Watercolor cold press postcard. It was painted using Winsor Newton Cotman tube colors.

I enjoyed blending the colors into the wet areas and showing the lights and darks in this plant. It was an enjoyable challenge!

Monochromatic Vintage Truck

This sepia-toned monochromatic "Vintage Truck," is from a tutorial by Sarah Cray for Let's Make Art.

The painting was truly a learning experience, one color to produce a 3D effect by layering values.

I painted this truck using Winsor Newton Cotman tube watercolors on Canson 140 lb. cold press paper.

The Little Barn a Line and Wash Painting

This "Little Barn," watercolor painting is from a tutorial by Paul Clark. It's a lesson on line and wash.

I printed the outline given by the artist and transferred the lines to my Canson 140 lb. watercolor paper using my light pad. I went over my lines with black Micron 01 pen. I painted the scene using Winsor Newton Cotman watercolor tubes.

I used a black Sharpie Fine Point Marker to fill in and darken various areas. I enhanced the painting using two General's Pastel Chalk Pencils: a white and a yellow-green.

I loved painting this piece and learning so much from the lesson.

My Little Boat a Watercolor

This watercolor painting is from a tutorial by Paul Clark. Well I like the painting, but I knew drawing a boat wasn't going to be easy. I wanted to try that and the seagulls and use my new rigger brush to paint the sea weed. It's done, not too bad!

I used Winsor Newton Cotman tube watercolors on Canson 140 lb. cold press paper. I added white General's Pastel Chalk Pencil to enhance some high lights on the painting.
